Women Sue Over Gorilla's Breast 'Fetish'

By MAY WONG, Associated Press writer

WOODSIDE, Calif. - Two fired caretakers for Koko, the world-famous sign-language-speaking gorilla, have sued their former bosses, claiming they were pressured to expose their breasts as a way of bonding with the 300-pound simian.

Nancy Alperin and Kendra Keller, both of San Francisco, claim they were subjected to sexual discrimination and then wrongfully terminated after reporting health and safety violations at Koko's home in Woodside, an upscale town in the south San Francisco Bay area.

The lawsuit against the Gorilla Foundation and its president, Francine "Penny" Patterson, the longtime trainer of the well-known gorilla, was filed this week in San Mateo County Superior Court. It seeks damages totaling more than $1 million.

Foundation attorney Todd Roberts said the case mischaracterizes the foundation and turns a "purported employment issue" into publicity "hurtful" for a reputable organization.

"We unequivocally deny these allegations and are confident that this case lacks merit," Roberts said.

Alperin and Keller were hired last year and were among 16 employees of the foundation, which was founded in 1976 to promote the preservation and study of gorillas. It is best known for Koko, who has mastered a vocabulary of more than 1,000 signs; the foundation says she has advanced further in language than any other non-human.

The suit claims Patterson pressured the two women on several occasions to expose their breasts to Koko, a 33-year-old female — sometimes in situations where other employees could potentially view their bodies. The women never undressed, said their attorney, Stephen Sommers of San Francisco.

They were threatened that if they "did not indulge Koko's nipple fetish, their employment with the Gorilla Foundation would suffer," the lawsuit alleged.

The lawsuit claims that on one occasion Patterson said, "'Koko, you see my nipples all the time. You are probably bored with my nipples. You need to see new nipples.'"

In addition to the alleged harassment, the two former workers claimed the Woodside facility had unsanitary and unsafe conditions, including rodents in the food preparation area and gorilla urine stored in the refrigerator where workers kept their lunches.

They complained to the California Division of Occupational Safety and Health and were fired on Aug. 6, the day after inspectors visited the site and found code violations, according to the lawsuit.

The lawsuit also claims the nonprofit failed to pay for overtime and provide rest breaks.

Unlike their wandering forest-dwelling counterparts, who sleep in different trees every night, city-dwelling monkeys live in fixed dwellings, usually abandoned buildings or rooftops. They may be out roaming the streets by day, but they always come home at night.

Rather than eat their food raw, city monkeys prefer their meals to be cooked. They don't like to do the cooking, though. Instead, they rip off markets or break into houses for a meal. They even snatch food right outta people's hands, usually imessin' people up pretty bad in the process. Imagine being jacked for your donut by one of these suckers! They'll rip ya a new one! Needless to say, this doesn't win them any points with their human neighbors, who beat the sh*t outta them on a regular bases for stealing candy from their babies and such. Sometimes people trap them and release them into the forest. But they make an abrupt 180 and head back to town right away.

They don't live the simple life like their forest cousins; its a h-a-r-d life for these urban monkeys. They always gotta be on their guard, gotta be tough. They get real territorial and vie for social position within their gangs. Although males are usually dominant in the monkey world, an urban female monkey will kick the a** of any forest male!

Wanna rule the world? Don't waste time trying to recruit wimpy forest monkeys to your cause. Get yerself an army of urban monkey soldiers. They might fight on your side if ya keep 'em supplied in fried bananas and such.

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - A couple's plans for a birthday party for their former pet chimpanzee turned tragic when two other chimps at an animal sanctuary escaped from their cage and attacked. The man was critically injured with massive wounds to his face, body and limbs, and the attacking animals were shot dead.

St. James and LaDonna Davis were at the Animal Haven Ranch in Caliente to celebrate the birthday of Moe, a 39-year-old chimpanzee who was taken from their suburban Los Angeles home in 1999 after biting off part of a woman's finger.

Moe was not involved in Thursday's attack, said Steve Martarano, a spokesman for the California Department of Fish and Game.

The couple had brought Moe a cake and were standing outside his cage when Buddy and Ollie, two of four chimpanzees in the adjoining cage, attacked St. James Davis, Martarano said. Officials have not determined how the chimps got out of their enclosure, he said.

LaDonna Davis, 64, suffered a bite wound to the hand while trying to help her 62-year-old husband, Martarano said.

The son-in-law of the sanctuary's owner killed the attacking animals, Martarano said.

"He saw what was happening and had one kind of weapon with him and then got another he felt would be more substantial and shot them," Martarano said. "He pretty much saved a life."

St. James Davis had severe facial injuries and would require extensive surgery in an attempt to reattach his nose, Dr. Maureen Martin of Kern Medical Center told KGET-TV of Bakersfield. His testicles and a foot also were severed, Kern County Sheriff's Cmdr. Hal Chealander told The Bakersfield Californian.

Davis was transported to Loma Linda University Medical Center, where he was undergoing surgery late Thursday, Martarano said.

Buddy, a 16-year-old male chimp, initiated the attack and after he was shot, Ollie, a 13-year-old male, grabbed the gravely injured man and dragged him down the road, authorities said.

"Everybody was trying to get the chimp off," Chealander said.

Two other chimps, females named Susie and Bones, also escaped from the cage they shared with Ollie and Buddy, prompting sheriff's deputies, animal control workers, and Fish and Game officials to launch a search.

The wayward pair were recovered by Animal Haven owner Virginia Brauer after five hours. Martarano said one chimp was two miles from the sanctuary, located 25 miles southeast of Bakersfield.

The Davises had waged an unsuccessful legal fight to bring Moe back to their West Covina home and visited him regularly at the sanctuary where he had been living since October. They brought the chimp from Africa decades ago after a poacher killed his mother.

Animal Haven Ranch has held state permits to shelter animals since 1985 and serves as a sanctuary for animals that have been confiscated or discovered lost, Martarano said.

It is allowed to house up to nine primates at one time and is home to one spider monkey and six chimpanzees, he said. The permits are held by Virginia and Ralph Brauer, whom neighbors described as responsible animal lovers.

"She's devoted her whole life to taking care of these chimpanzees," said Jeanne Miller, a family friend

After a few months XTC lost its reinforcing effects, unlike coke. 2 months after stopping drugs the primates brains showed no damage and normal neurotransmitter levels! Very interesting.

Remember these animals were self administering. That usually means that they press a lever that injects drug into a IV line. They choose how many times to press. Very different from being given a huge overdose to force toxicity.
The effects of self-administered 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) on behavior and neurochemistry have not been previously studied in laboratory primates. We investigated the capacity of MDMA and its enantiomers to maintain contingent responding over an extended duration, whether any decrements in the reinforcing effects of these compounds would be observed over time, whether such decrements would be MDMA-selective, and whether any neurochemical correlates could be identified. Animals were previously trained to self-administer cocaine, then exposed to periodic substitutions of various doses of racemic MDMA and its enantiomers; full dose-effect curves were generated for each MDMA compound repeatedly over the duration of the study. After approximately 18 months of MDMA self-administration, drug exposure was halted and after at least 2 months drug abstinence, animals were scanned using positron emission tomography (PET) with the vesicular monoamine transporter (VMAT) ligand dihydrotetrabenazine (DTBZ). Shortly thereafter, animals were euthanized, brains were dissected, and samples were assayed for brain monoamines and their metabolites using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), and for VMAT using DTBZ binding. The reinforcing effects of racemic and R(-)-MDMA were reduced over a long series (months) of individual self-administration access periods; the reinforcing effects of S(+)-MDMA were more resistant to this effect, but were attenuated for one animal. The reinforcing effects of cocaine were not altered by chronic MDMA self-administration, nor was the VMAT binding potential as assessed by PET. Further, there were no measurable decrements in serotonin (5-HT), 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA), dopamine (DA), 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid (DOPAC) or VMAT in any brain regions assayed. The reinforcing effects of MDMA are selectively attenuated by chronic MDMA self-administration, although this behavioral change appears to occur in the absence of any frank neurochemical correlates of toxicity.Neuropsychopharmacology advance online publication, 24 March 2004; doi:10.1038/sj.npp.1300442

From BBC news online-

Mice have been used to produce viable monkey sperm using tissue transplanted from the testes of macaques.
The US scientists involved say their work might one day help to conserve animals that are facing extinction.

It might also be possible to grow human sperm in mice, although the team agree this would be a controversial move.

The researchers, from the universities of Pennsylvania and California, report their studies in the latest issue of the journal Biology of Reproduction.

In 2002, the same team produced goat and pig sperm from mice. It was the first time that sperm had been produced outside the original animal.

Testis transplant

The latest procedure involves transplanting a tiny amount of testicular tissue from an immature rhesus macaque monkey under the skin of a lab mouse.

Ina Dobrinski, of the University of Pennsylvania, and colleagues transplanted the tissue into mice that had deficient immune systems, so that it would not be rejected.

"We started this work with primate testis after we had success with domestic animals," Professor Dobrinski told BBC News Online.

The sperm were injected into an egg...
After seven months, the testes grafts on the backs of the mice were seen to produce viable sperm.

Grafting immature testis tissue appears to work because the host mouse had been castrated, Dobrinski says.

This boosts levels of the brain hormones that switch on sperm production, so the young tissue grows rapidly. The technique is expected to work on adult testis grafts, too.

The Pennsylvania group will now try the procedure on testis tissue from domestic cats, as a trial for endangered big cats that rarely survive to reproductive age in captivity.

The technique could also produce offspring from other endangered species or valuable livestock, even if only immature males exist.

The latest work with primates will help reduce the number of such animals used in laboratories.

Of mice and men

"The main benefits we see are that this approach provides a system to study and manipulate primate spermatogenesis, thereby minimising the need for experimentation in primates," Professor Dobrinski says.

...which resulted in an embryo
In theory, human testis tissue grafted on to mice could produce sperm.

The technique may also provide a way of testing toxins or male contraceptive drugs on sperm development.

Prepubescent boys undergoing treatment for cancer that will render them sterile could benefit, Professor Dobrinski suggest.

Their immature testis tissue could be removed prior to treatment and transplanted on to mice for sperm production.

Theoretically, it could enable a boy to become a father before he reached puberty.

Chimp Escapes From Zoo, Forces Evacuation
Tue Jan 20, 7:15 AM ET Add Strange News - AP to My Yahoo!

LOS ANGELES - An 80-pound chimpanzee dubbed an "escape artist" has done it again. The 15-year-old chimp named Gracie busted out of her enclosure at the Los Angeles Zoo on Monday and forced the evacuation of about 9,000 visitors.

The primate, who had escaped four times before, was tranquilized and returned to captivity after 45 minutes, the zoo said.

Zoo Director John Lewis said Gracie is well known as a breakout specialist since she arrived in 1998.

"Each time we've made corrections based on her abilities, and she's found another way," Lewis said.

Gracie slipped out of her exhibit at 3:30 p.m. into the zoo crowded with visitors for the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.

The chimp didn't stray far from her enclosure, however, and zoo staff surrounded her and moved her to another part of the park.

Visitors were ordered to evacuate while Gracie was on the loose, but Lewis said no one was harmed.

Gracie is currently being held in an enclosure with tighter security until designers can ensure she won't escape again, Lewis said.

SINGAPORE (AP) - People in strait-laced Singapore were urged Monday to act like monkeys - the Chinese zodiac sign for the coming Lunar year - for the sake of their country.

Singaporeans could foster an economic recovery this year by behaving more like monkeys, Deputy Prime Minister Tony Tan said in a Lunar New Year message reported in The Straits Times newspaper.

Chinese communities around the world will herald the start of the Year of the Monkey on Thursday. Chinese believe the monkey is clever, flexible, innovative and confident, but can also be selfish, jealous and vain.

"Be like a monkey. When things happen, you have to be nimble. Take advantage of opportunities, don't be cast down, but rise to the challenge if it does occur," Tan was quoted as saying.

Tan urged Singaporeans not to be daunted by the challenges of helping the city-state recover from its worst economic downturn. The SARS outbreak, the Iraq war and slumps in global manufacturing and air travel hit Singapore hard in 2003.

Singapore's economy grew 0.8 percent last year, but unemployment sits at a 17-year high of 5.9 percent.

Last year, in the Year of the Sheep - known in Singapore as the Year of the Goat - Prime Minister Goh Chok Tung issued a similar animal-themed call to arms when faced with "an imminent war in Iraq."

"In the year of the Goat, we must try to be like the mountain goat, sure-footed and hardy and able to move safely in a rocky environment," Goh said.
MONKEYS will go on strike for equal pay the same as trade unionists, scientists said yesterday.

A new study has shown that, like us, they possess a sense of injustice and resent getting a raw deal.

Researchers teaching brown capuchin monkeys to swap tokens for food found they would reject a piece of cucumber if they saw another monkey being given a grape instead.

In tests where rewards were equal 95 per cent cooperated but the level fell to 60 per cent when they saw others receiving more for the same work.

And it fell to 20 per cent if other monkeys were rewarded for doing nothing.

Some would not swap any more tokens, while others accepted the food but would not eat it.

Dr Sarah Brosnan, of Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, said: "People often forgo a reward if it is not what they expect, or think, is fair.

"Our findings indicate the emotional sense of fairness plays a key role in such decision-making."
