Women Sue Over Gorilla's Breast 'Fetish'
By MAY WONG, Associated Press writer
WOODSIDE, Calif. - Two fired caretakers for Koko, the world-famous sign-language-speaking gorilla, have sued their former bosses, claiming they were pressured to expose their breasts as a way of bonding with the 300-pound simian.
Nancy Alperin and Kendra Keller, both of San Francisco, claim they were subjected to sexual discrimination and then wrongfully terminated after reporting health and safety violations at Koko's home in Woodside, an upscale town in the south San Francisco Bay area.
The lawsuit against the Gorilla Foundation and its president, Francine "Penny" Patterson, the longtime trainer of the well-known gorilla, was filed this week in San Mateo County Superior Court. It seeks damages totaling more than $1 million.
Foundation attorney Todd Roberts said the case mischaracterizes the foundation and turns a "purported employment issue" into publicity "hurtful" for a reputable organization.
"We unequivocally deny these allegations and are confident that this case lacks merit," Roberts said.
Alperin and Keller were hired last year and were among 16 employees of the foundation, which was founded in 1976 to promote the preservation and study of gorillas. It is best known for Koko, who has mastered a vocabulary of more than 1,000 signs; the foundation says she has advanced further in language than any other non-human.
The suit claims Patterson pressured the two women on several occasions to expose their breasts to Koko, a 33-year-old female — sometimes in situations where other employees could potentially view their bodies. The women never undressed, said their attorney, Stephen Sommers of San Francisco.
They were threatened that if they "did not indulge Koko's nipple fetish, their employment with the Gorilla Foundation would suffer," the lawsuit alleged.
The lawsuit claims that on one occasion Patterson said, "'Koko, you see my nipples all the time. You are probably bored with my nipples. You need to see new nipples.'"
In addition to the alleged harassment, the two former workers claimed the Woodside facility had unsanitary and unsafe conditions, including rodents in the food preparation area and gorilla urine stored in the refrigerator where workers kept their lunches.
They complained to the California Division of Occupational Safety and Health and were fired on Aug. 6, the day after inspectors visited the site and found code violations, according to the lawsuit.
The lawsuit also claims the nonprofit failed to pay for overtime and provide rest breaks.

Re: Naughty primates!!!
11/09I know this post is old, but I'm new to the tribe and this kinda brought back memories. . . .
As if I need to explain, this lawsuit is a load of crap. I worked at GF for 1 1/2 years. The turnover rate was 95% and there were PLENTY of violations to take action against (hiring & firing practices, health & labor violations, etc. etc.) Not to mention the fact that Penny and Ron haven't published anything new or substantial in at least 10 years. And the celebrity bandwagon, blech. I lost all respect for Peter Gabriel. . .
however, the alleged sexual harrassment is just the attorney's way of getting media attention. A lawsuit based on labor violations isn't going to get the media's attention; alternately, a lawsuit based on scandal WILL negatively impact GF's relationship with the Maui Pineapple company, who had offered the lease on 70+ acres.
I didn't know Nancy or Kendra, both were after my time. And the second lawsuit by the Admin Assist. is also bull, because I personally know that the Admin staff (who work in Redwood City) are not even allowed to come near Koko or Ndume.
When the plaintiff's attorneys approached me, I was really skeptical. I am sad to see how Koko turned out as an adult gorilla, and I'm sad that Penny and Ron want to retire in Maui, at the extent of little old ladies and kids' piggybanks. But I'm not bringing the devil down, not that way. And I fear that this will do damage to the legitimate work that was done in the area of nonhuman primate communication and the overall concept of "what is intelligence."
btw, I met Koko on my last day--the caregivers snuck me out to her trailer when the bosses were away. I did show her my breasts. That's just her way of seeing that we are very alike . . . -

11/09<I did show her my breasts. That's just her way of seeing that we are very alike . . .>
I heard through the grapevine something of the same ilk, that the breast showing had something to do with Koko uderstanding what gender each person was, rather than some sexual motive... -

Re: Naughty primates!!!
11/09That's pretty much the scoop. She also has a thing about teeth, tattoos and other characteristics that make us all the same, yet unique.

Re: Naughty primates!!!
12/10So why are you disappointed in how Koko turned out as an adult gorilla?
Just curious.
Also, I can see how Koko would want to see the gender differences in us. I dont think animals have the same issues with sex and shame of body parts as humans do.... -

Re: Naughty primates!!!
12/11It's not so much how she turned out, although behaves like and is treated like a pampered, spoiled child. A very intelligent, but bored child.
It's more the fact that this wonderful, groundbreaking research is at risk by the mere fact that they do nothing now with it. Penny Patterson doesn't pursue any new research. She takes her old publications, changes a few words here and there, and republishes it. Just to justify the "research" qualifications of the organization.
She has weird hiring practices as well. I don't know much about her current staff, so I cannot speak for them. But when I was there, she was firing or chasing away the qualified caregivers and replacing them with people with literally no animal husbandry, zoology, or any academic skills whatsoever. I think she wanted people who didn't know enough to question her poor methology.
I could go into many more details, but I'm sure her team of lawyers would be looking for me . . .
As for gender differences and Koko's ways of expression--totally natural and totally benign. She's just learning. She has a cute sign for humans: "fake tooth." because I worked in the research trailer up the path about 100 feet, I was referred to as "upper fake tooth." Sweet, really.

Lawsuit over ape's 'nipple fetish' settled
Fri Dec 2, 2005 11:06 AM ET
SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Two women who had taken care of Koko, a gorilla who communicates with humans by sign language, have settled a lawsuit charging the president of its sanctuary urged them to show their breasts to the ape, a lawyer said on Thursday.
Nancy Alperin and Kendra Keller had sued the Woodside, California-based Gorilla Foundation, claiming its president had pressed them to bare their breasts for Koko to help bond with the gorilla.
The two said foundation President Francine Patterson would interpret hand movements by Koko as a demand to see human nipples. They declined and were later fired in an act of retaliation for not indulging what the lawsuit called Koko's "nipple fetish."
The lawyer for the foundation said the two were fired for different reasons and that a county court earlier this year dismissed their sexual harassment and wrongful termination charges.
Attorney Todd Roberts said the foundation agreed to settle the lawsuit to get on with its work. Terms of the settlement were confidential, he added.
"We denied all of the allegations in the complaint and continue to deny the allegations," Roberts said.
Stephen Sommers, a lawyer for the two women, declined to comment on the lawsuit and its settlement.
